7-Minute Cancer Shot Launched in India: Cost, Benefits & What Patients Need to Know

India has recently introduced a new injectable immunotherapy treatment for lung cancer that can be given in just seven minutes. Unlike traditional intravenous (IV) immunotherapy, which may take hours in a hospital, this new treatment is injected under the skin, making the process faster and more convenient for patients.

The injection is mainly designed for people with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which is one of the most common types of lung cancer in India. Doctors say the treatment works by helping the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells more effectively. It blocks a protein called PD-L1, which cancer cells often use to hide from the body’s immune defenses.

One of the biggest benefits of this new cancer shot is the shorter treatment time. Earlier, many patients had to spend several hours at cancer centers for IV infusions. With this injection, treatment can be completed in around seven minutes, reducing hospital visits and improving comfort, especially for elderly patients and those traveling long distances for care.

However, this treatment may not be suitable for everyone. Doctors first check whether the patient’s tumor has high PD-L1 levels before recommending the injection. Experts believe only selected lung cancer patients may benefit from this therapy.

Cost is another major concern. Reports suggest one dose costs around ₹3.7 lakh, and many patients may require multiple doses during treatment. While some patient-support programs and government schemes may help reduce expenses, affordability remains a challenge for many families.

Doctors also remind patients that this injection is not a “miracle cure.” Like all cancer treatments, it may cause side effects such as fatigue, nausea, skin reactions, or immune-related complications. Patients should discuss risks, benefits, and treatment goals carefully with their oncology team before starting therapy.

The launch of this faster immunotherapy marks an important step forward in cancer care in India. Still, awareness, early diagnosis, and access to proper medical guidance remain equally important in improving cancer outcomes.
